Activated nuts  and seeds are very simple raw or paleo snack to make at home and have ready for a reliable snack. They store well in a sealed jar but don’t tend to last long. Reduce the amount of salt to taste & don’t eat them all yourself, or not all at once anyway!

Start with any combination of nuts (e.g. almonds, brazil, hazelnuts) and seeds (pumpkin, sunflower) you like. Cover them in filtered water and add about a tablespoon of good (Himalayan or Sea) salt.

After soaking, rinse them under cold running water. Tap dry with a clean tea towel. Add to a bowl.

To the nuts and seeds mixture add your spices and stir to ensure well covered.

Hot, sweet and salty

  • 1 dessertspoon of Himalayan salt, ground
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 small red chilli, roughly chopped
  • 1 dried (i used smoked) chilli, roughly chopped
  • 1 inch of fresh ginger, roughly chopped
  • 2 -3 dessertspoons of raw honey
  • 1 dessertspoon of extra virgin olive oil

Add all ingredients to a small blender & whizz up to make a paste. Pour the paste over the nuts and mix through. Dehydrate for about 8 hours in a dehydrator (or in the lowest setting of your oven) or until dry. Will keep well in an airtight container.
